Does Super Glue Damage Gold

According to the goldsmiths, super glue doesn’t damage gold. Because gold is a metal, and superglue exclusively bonds metallic items rather than damaging them.

But it looks odd if the gold jewelry has super glue on its surface. In that case, you have to remove them efficiently without damaging your jewelry.

Yes, you can use super glue on gold to attach stones and pearls to make gorgeous gold jewelry.

However, you have to be more careful when using super glue on gold. Otherwise, glue can be runny and spread to the entire unit.

Applying acetone nail polish remover, gently rubbing after 2-3 minutes, and wiping with a damp cloth is a simple technique to remove super glue from gold jewelry.

Gold jewelry is expensive and, in most cases, involves sentimental value. So these few words aren’t enough to follow the instructions.

Let me share my horrible experience with gluing my gold earrings and how I removed them.

I regularly wear old-school gold earrings, as they hold my sentiments.

One fine Sunday morning, grabbing a cup of black coffee, I sat on the balcony’s chair, sunbathing and sipping the coffee. Within a few moments, I felt fresh and charming.

Suddenly, my hand went to my right ear, and I found the earrings were getting too dirty due to air dust and debris. It would be better if I washed them to rejuvenate their vivid color.

So I put them off my ear and kept them on the table. I went to the kitchen to arrange soapy water. But, unfortunately, in the meantime, my 5-year-old son dropped super glue on one earring. That broke my heart. Luckily, I could remove the glue from my earring.

What I Used

  • Acetone nail polish remover
  • A cotton bar
  • A damp and a soft dry cloth

Step 1: Apply nail polish remover

I applied a drop of acetone nail polish remover with a cotton bar on the glue spot. As acetone is a chemical, using too much acetone on gold is not recommended.

Step 2: Clean with a damp cloth

Let the acetone dissolve the glue for 1-2 minutes. After that, I gently rub the gluey area with a damp cloth to remove the dissolved glue residue. Finally, I wiped the space with a dry cloth and made the gold earring dry.

Don’t you have acetone nail polish remover at home?

Nothing to worry about!

Any cooking oil (olive oil, coconut oil, etc.), mayonnaise, Peanut butter, baking soda, vinegar, petroleum jelly, or toothpaste are also effective in removing glue from metal.

I have written a separate post on removing superglue from metal or stainless steel. You can check it out here.

So you have got your answer, does super glue damage gold or not.
